ONmyMind: The Art Institute of New York City

As twelve talented & lucky students get set to show their collections in the tents when The Art Institute of New York City seriously ups the Educational ante of Fashion Week by moving their graduate show to the venerable runways of Lincoln Center, ten of them share with us what is going through their minds as they make the formidable leap from the cool fluorescent lights of the classroom to the white hot lights of the runway.

See videos & sketches from all the designers:  www.aifashionwee.com

Gita Omri-   I keep thinking someone is going to come up to me at the show, not knowing I’m one of the designers and ask me to leave my own show!

Mark Walters-   Last week I remember running up & down the hallways at school looking as if my head was gone. Then I asked myself, ‘is this what other designers do before a show because this is madness — getting my garments finished, checking for errors, & questioning decisions… the show is almost here.’  My dream is coming true!  My mom is going to see my creations for the first time & it’s going to be at Mercedes Benz Fashion Week!  What better way to show her what I do & thank her for all she as done for me from the start?  I love you mom… I can’t wait.

Danni Xu-   I am the first one finished with my collection of the currently graduating designers!  I am already looking for my next inspiration & I hope to find that inspiration from travel.

Kayla Braunston-   I don’t think I’ve ever been this busy in my entire life! Showing at Lincoln Center is the chance of a lifetime and I want to create pieces that people will remember, even if it takes me a gazillion sleepless nights.  I love this collection, I want it to be spectacular, so I can sleep when I’m dead.

Jet Black-   I am pretty amped. Aside from lack of sleep and yoga, I feel like my head is in a pretty good place.

Isaiah Issac-   How blessed I am to have this opportunity. I couldn’t ask for more.

Nelson Tavarez-  I’m so ready to share my point of view as a designer. This is everything for me and my whole life is wrapped around 10 minutes of glory.  I hope I will turn heads.  I just can’t wait!

Luisina Victoria-   A blend of mixed thoughts circling my mind where anxiety and focus in a weird way keeps me focused. I’m still in a positive mood to fulfill all good expectations.

Jeri-Lee Prescod-Alexander-   As Fashion week approaches all that’s on my mind is what my garments will look like walking the runway at Lincoln Center. Bright lights and long legs…let’s go!

Joshuan Aponte-   Start and finish my last look by tonight!!!!!!!  (spin, spin, spin, wonder woman theme song playing in my head!!!)
