There was a strong East-meets-West vibe at Sheena Trivedi’s Spring Presentation. Even prior to entering the venue, fans of Trivedi who formed the line outside of the Chelsea gallery were donning bindis along with their contemporary, Western eveningwear – a combination indicative of the collection about to be shown.
Sheena’s homage to her Indian heritage was apparent in the details of the pieces – the beading, embroidery and fringe, as well as the handmade brocades, which were then juxtaposed with non-traditional leather and silk georgettes. The silhouettes covered a broad range of applications, the daywear featuring fit-and-flare silk georgette tops layered underneath short-sleeved leather jackets, as well as zip-up hoodies which were reminiscent of hijabs when worn up – perhaps the only obvious Eastern reference among the silhouettes. The eveningwear was even more restrained, both in terms of shape and embellishments. Emphasis turned to the luxurious fabrics, which made up the streamlined and contemporary pieces that closed the presentation.
