The design duo behind the underground label martinMartin, Diane Moss-Martin and Eric Martin, presented an exhaustively long but intriguing collection for Fall 2011. It began as a series of Black on Black textural assemblages that were worn by both Men & Women with little to no discernable differences, thus clearly asserting their position as an androgynous label. As the show progressed through various stages & levels of deconstruction the color range too progressed to incorporating the occasional White piece & predictably ended the show on a total grouping of White on White assemblages. Interesting were the garments that were sent out several times, all being worn in different ways that ranged from a floor length knit coat being able to be worn as a poncho, or belted as a drapey sweater. This flexibility is a theme that has long been an undercurrent in the market, but has yet to be done in a way that won me over. A few of the multi-use pieces (which I generally find to be contrived), shown by martinMartin actually moved me to the point of thinking “I could wear that” which speaks volumes of this duo’s design abilities.
