Beginning September 1st, 2014, Virgin Atlantic staff will go to work a bit more fashionably dressed than they did before. Thanks to the quirky, at times irreverent, but always 100% British aesthetic of Vivienne Westwood, who was charged with redesigning the airline’s staff uniforms on the occasion of the airline’s 30th Anniversary celebration.
To celebrate the collaboration & unveil the results, Sir Richard Branson, Dame Vivienne Westwood, & disco pop icon Blondie joined a host of famous faces at a festive eventon July 1st, 2014. The party included a massive red carpet which was definitely a harbinger of the uniforms about to be unveiled, which each included a serious dash of the company’s trademark “Virgin Red.”
Take a look at the video below for a look at the (Virgin) Red carpet launch party:
Original design & sustainability are top of the priorities for both Westwood & Virgin in this long term partnership. These ideals are evident throughout the collection in the way of intelligent cuts, beautiful tailoring, as well as polyester yarn made from recycled plastic bottles, as well as a nano finish to extend the garments life & retain color
Vivienne Westwood has redesigned the iconic cabin crew look with an elegant, & feminine red jacket inspired by the “Bettina” jacket designed in the early 90’s with a matching red pencil skirt. The hand drawn wing designs are a recurring theme across all members of the team while a new addition of bags for ground staff has also been introduced by the Ethical Fashion Initiative in Nairobi in collaboration with the International Trade Centre of the United Nations.
Westwood’s iconic inspirations are referenced then 40s French couture cutting, with a double breasted ‘drape coat’ for women, and updating the classic red shoe with Westwood’s trademark hourglass heel. Male crew will be provided with a sharp Saville Row inspired three piece suit with a contemporary twist in a deep burgundy Oxford weave woolOver 7,500 staff including cabin crew, pilots, Clubhouse staff & Virgin Holidays employees will receive the new uniform consisting of 22 pieces in total which has been trial tested across airports & on board over the past year before doing full duty this coming September.
