Mim & Ray, a new handbag company featuring luxurious Italian leathers & fine wool panels, is adding another element to the must-have accessory: PURPOSE. Mim & Ray handbags feature fine wool panel detailing, expertly & lovingly hand knitted by a senior adult artisan. Until the launch of Mim & Ray, the young-at-heart knitters had a passion for their craft but no outlet for their artistry.
Each Mim & Ray bag is designed by the creative team at TobyStephen Designs, Inc. & finished in Italy, where skilled artisans add fine Italian leather to create the completed work of art you see today. The name, Mim & Ray, honors the memory of Miriam & Raymond Klein who established KleinLife in 1975 to enhance the quality of life for people of all ages & backgrounds.
“Mim & Ray handbags are not just an expression of great style. When a woman carries a Mim & Ray bag, she knows that she has made a difference,” says Toby Strogatz, designer & company founder. ”It’s an expression of great humanity. This collection is a culmination of design inspiration, love of high-end accessories, & the need to support the work of important organizations.”
The knitters are part of KleinLife, a non-profit organization that provides essential services, friendship, & support. The program is now giving these older craftspeople a renewed sense of purpose and pride, as well as financial support for their retirement. The seniors knit in groups, strengthening life-long ties with some & making new friends with others. That friendship & camaraderie is woven into each & every stitch of the Mim & Ray bags. TobyStephen Designs Inc., a non-profit entity, pays a license fee & ensures that net profits raised through the sale of every Mim & Ray handbag is earmarked specifically for KleinLife’s 35,000 recipients ages 2 to 102.
The collection debuted recently at a private event in the company’s hometown of Philadelphia, PA. The event, held at the iconic Rittenhouse Hotel on picturesque Rittenhouse Square, was the perfect punctuation to a story that includes some of the finest Italian needlework in the industry as well as stunning leathers, suedes & exotics like one of the best looking Alligator bags we’ve seen in a long time (our favorite… the Electric Blue Alligator “Mim” Bag that had more than one head turning at the launch event… it’s also available in Black & Tan, for those less adventurous amongst us).
The styles are numerous, so there’s one for each of you, or, you could always choose several like many were at the launch event! Each style is thoughtfully named for a member of Miriam & Raymond’s family (both human & four-legged) – Lilly, Debbie Rose, Sage, Riley, Reesa, Melissa, Nayeli, Winston… even Stephen Klein gets a nod with the SK wristlet. A collection novel highlight can be found on silver metallic bag that is embroidered with the eyes of the Toby Strogatz’s daughter, Jennifer. The bag’s name? The Jennifer bag of course!
Each bag is currently available for pre-order ahead of the Fall 2017 launch on the company website. Prices range from $275 to $695.
Toby sums the spirit of the collection up best when she stated, “as a style-minded, multi-tasking woman, I understand the need for functional elements that also translate well into an accessory that also gives back. We designed this collection for that woman in mind. Our ultimate goal is to empower as many people as possible with our products,” says Strogatz. Empower they did… generations of women at once!
