French Deal- Palais Tokyo- Paris
Volume 4 commences in a dark venue with a somber mood & a dramatic sunset projection on the horizon. As the show begins, a beautiful spoken-word opening in an African language is heard, & two women in simple tribal garb appear for a brief moment. Drumbeats fill the room as a dancer emerges on stage & begins a solo dance that evokes the powerful movement of water. He is joined by several others throughout the show, as they share the story of the Baoule people.
Exquisitely tailored suits, slim fit trousers, a multitude of jackets, & a gorgeous openwork patterned fabric that runs throughout the collection, are accessorized with huge raffia hats & headdresses, long fringe bags, & hoop earrings, on both men & women. Key items are cargo pockets, metal eyelets, leather lacing, bomber & motorcycle jackets, & an impressive cape made of Raffia straw. A simple palette of natural colors, Beige, Black & Gray, highlighted with accents of Gold, enrich the beginning of the presentation. A few intermissions of dance change the palette to Red & Black, then again to Sky Blue, all in Baoule loincloth which is original to the Ivory Coast & the Ashanti people. Hip hop influences are intertwined with couture sewing techniques in this expertly crafted collection of Menswear.
French Deal is the embodiment of the Ivorian & Parisian worlds blended into one. The brainchild of French-born & African descent professional dancer Steeven Kodjia. He combines his love of dance & design, perfectly marrying the two in this season’s runway show, making it not only a fashion walk but also a spectacular dance performance.
