Walking into Topshop’s impromptu venue at Bedford Square Gardens I immediately knew what the feel of the collection would be – futuristic. Outside of the tent, there were white, orb-like lights hanging in the trees of the square while an all white bar allowed show-goers to grab a glass of champagne before entering. Inside, you felt as if you were inside of a spaceship. In the tent, all you saw was gray and white and a runway curved in the shape of a U, for easy walking and for Unique I am sure.
Topshop’s spring collection started off with a sheer white, knee length dress with strategically placed panels that gave it an off the shoulder feel. The dress though being almost see-through was beautifully cut and looked quite daytime appropriate, probably because of the looseness of the fit. Looseness and volume continued to be highlighted throughout Topshop’s spring collection. Giant black and gray checks on oversized trousers with a graphically striped baggy top didn’t clash as much as it sounds, even when paired with an extravagant unzipped A-line coat with closely-knit black and white plaid. Note – Topshop showed this look with pointy, cap toe pumps – meaning that they are continuing the widely popular trend through to 2013. A white boxy blazer with slim trousers confirmed my assumptions that Topshop decided to play with proportion for spring. Color made its way into the collection with a slouchy, butter yellow blazer with a narrow lapel over a sheer mod minidress with burned out squares. Giant, graphic hibiscus flowers made an appearance at Topshop, first as a blazer and baggy trouser combination then as an excessively loose piercing V-neck shirtdress. A three-size-too-big, gray jersey vest decorated with zippers and giant lapels is going on my Wish List for spring, as is the huge creamy white, egg-shaped jacket that followed it. Topshop loves the collarbone for spring, deep V-necks are shown in blouses and button downs, a few one-shouldered dresses and blouses made an appearance, and boat neck dresses and tops highlighted models’ delicate frames.
Topshop Unique’s spring collection was a hit and will be with its customers. I am curious to see what the price points are going to be for this upper range line. The patterned blouses and cocoon jacket had me drooling, and apparently a printed panel dress sold out online within the hour of the show being live streamed (Topshop offered the ability to watch the show online as well as pre-order for spring). It is going to be interesting to see how the popularity of what sold online influences the retailer’s view of what should be sold in stores.
