The “ever-evolving & inspiring urban metropolis” served as inspiration for Desigual‘s Fall 2016 collection, but the results seemed more Eastern European & nomadic than urban jungle. Regardless the results were no less pleasing to the eye & were chock full of fashion punch. Out of respect to the designers, let’s go with the urban metropolis thread & carry onward…
In the design team’s eyes, the city is a dark & moody place where smokey Blacks & Browns served as the base for rich Spice tones in bold botanical florals & rich paisleys that were used in every conceivable manner from placements to all overs to great success. The collection, as shown, seemed overly heavy & layered, but it was clear even from the distance of our seats that each piece has enough fashion chops to stand on its own & will ultimately prove the centerpiece for whatever outfit of which it is a part. Fabrications were as rich as the color palette & were at their best when deeply textured like the velvet suits that appeared in several variations. Standout moments also included the few times that denim appeared in the line-up as a temporary moment of visual relief. These moments provided a glimpse of what the collection may look like when worked into the final customers’ wardrobe as I cannot imagine many cases when the collection will be worn in full head to toe ensembles.
Desigual shows have a reputation of being the only show each fashion week where the models are visibly enjoying themselves while walking the runway & this season proved no different. The exact moment when the runways became a place for brooding, intense looks (the type that Zoolander himself claims as ‘trademark’), but each season Desigual’s runway coaches remind us all of happier times on the catwalk. For this alone I say “thanks!” When combined with the collection shown for Fall 2016, I offer a resounding “THANKS!”
