NY Men’s Fashion Week got off to a sizzling hot start when Manila, Phillippines based underwear company Bench/Body presented a 28 piece collection in collaboration with New York design duo Raul Arevalo & Bradley Schmidt of CADET. The mens focused collection, with a few women’s pieces thrown in for good measure & balance, was chock full of tropical inspired patterns in nearly Neon bright color palette that looked fresh from the jungles of some tropical island in the South Pacific.
Models sort of hung out in the space which was draped here & there with plastic tarps. Several had some tribal motifs – slashes, turtles, etc. – painted on their bodies to lend a feeling of theme to the event, but it was all sort of superfluous. This was a show that was much quieter & lacked the flash of the brand’s numerous efforts in Asia. However, the collection spoke for itself & ultimately wasn’t helped nor hurt by the distraction of the staging no matter how understated it was.
This collection, relatively new to the shores of North America, is a strong entrant into the crowded & difficult to differentiate underwear market, however, given the strong collection shown for Spring 2017, it’s clear that Bench Body actually has a chance of doing what so many others have failed to do… succeed.
