During NYFW, we always try to go off the beaten path for a few shows a season to see what we can find. It’s like a fashion lottery… you just never know. Usually we are disappointed, sometimes we are not. Then other times… we discover something like we found at the Swiss based Veronika Brusa for Berenik show this season! Extraordinary! Extraordinarily extraordinary!!!
Once we put the unfortunate situation with the PR agency at the front door & seating aside, this collection renewed our belief in the merits of the fashion system. It is still possible, in the current Fashion Week environment - where commerciality trumps creativity… where the collection itself takes 2nd seat to a front row full of the current flavor of the moment girl who is an “influencer” (most likely to none more than her circle of “friends”)… where the hassle simply isn’t worth the 11 minutes the actual show is live. The Berenik show this season made all of the posturing of the audience of posers, all of the frivolity of the other collections we suffered through for the season, all of the NYFW ridiculousness not only seem worth it, but it highlighted just how stupid it has all become. Read on…
These clothes were brilliant! So well made. So well cut. So imaginatively designed. Yet… so accessible to an audience beyond the 10 fanatics that most lesser known collections count as a client roster. These are great clothes for a variety of customers. The fashion obsessed among them for sure, as there were enough of the moment trends to keep this fickle group interested, but also for the average woman (& man!) who is looking to update their wardrobe for the season… to inject a little something new & alternative into the mix. Throw a Berenik top on with a pair of jeans & your look is updated, throw a whole look on & your evening is street style photographer worthy! Add to the look one of the insanely brilliant coif looks from celebrity hair stylist Laurent D. from Salon Privé & you’ll be among the fashion elite of the season.
Obviously I’m carrying on a bit here, but I hope you get the point. The collection shown on the Berenik runway was precisely what we come to Fashion Weeks in search of. But the memories didn’t end with the last look…
As the models came out for the finale walk around, they reached a certain point &, on cue, collapsed to the floor & literally played dead as if the life had been sucked from their bodies in a mass instant! They fell to the ground & just laid there frozen in the moment. Literally 5 minutes passed & not a soul moved. Finally, yours truly among them, the editor crowd began documenting the moment on our cameras. We got up & walked among the “dead” for another 10 minutes taking photos of each from every angle. Then, again on cue, the models came back to life, stood up & walked off the stage. The crowd shrieked their approval, myself among them. GENIUS!!! Simply GENIUS!!!
