Serbian men’s & women’s designer Bata Spasojevic was celebrating his arrival in America as his capsule collection closed the evening at the InLove Magazine Best of Serbia show. His men walked the runway with what at first appeared to be tribal face paint, but upon closer inspection, it was Black & White versions of the American flag that covered half of each model’s faces. What first appeared to be distracting, in the end proved endearing & charming. He carried the American theme one step further, & demonstrated his obvious biting sense of humor, when one model walked the runway carrying his large Starbuck’s coffee cup as if he was coming back to his office off of a mid-day coffee break… or perhaps he was looking for a way to tie in the Green from the lone colorful garment that was to appear later in the show (read below…)?
Had the clothing been allowed to speak on its own, a far different message may have been communicated. The collection, entitled “Hard Angel,” was a melange of styles that seemed to include a dash of late 70′s Punk, a dash of every era of Rock-n-Roll & even a bit Willie Wonka (as seen in the eyes of Tim Burton). This all sounds like a mess, but in reality, the collection proved to be a success with an end statement that somehow seemed “now”.
Completely devoid of color, unless Black & White count, except for one t-shirt that featured a large scale photo real print of what appeared to be half an Orange melon of some sort as well as a giant Red flower, & a (Starbuck’s) Green jacquard tuxedo jacket in a women’s look, the collection relied on cut, detail, & silhouette to make it’s message clear. The cuts were down the middle with some fitted, tailored ensembles & others that were more slouchy & roomy. The same statement was made in the women’s range for an overall cohesive collection that, when dissected & inserted into one’s wardrobe piecemeal, as all fashion is, will add a bit of Eastern European spice that I venture to say will spark more than one conversation around the water cooler or over drinks at some Lower East Side bar.
