As part of InLove Magazine‘s week long celebration of Eastern European design during NY Fashion Week, Serbian newcomer Zvonko Markovic presented his collection of lush evening wear that had a luxury feel to it while still remaining accessible & appealing to the fashion masses. The collection at times had a bit of a heavy handed design voice, but when not viewed en masse, the result was a collection of solid evening dresses & a few separates that could easily be tweaked for the general public, i.e. lengthened here & shortened there, to be ready for the countless formal occasions that fill the ballrooms of cultural centers worldwide.
There were a few surprises of note, the novel cut-outs in the mid-section, especially successful on one bateau neck Black velvet mini-dress that had a pinwheel like cutout across the back that was completely not visible when viewed from the front, as well as the strategically placed lace appliqués to keep the dresses on the proper side of decent were most notable. While none of the detailing left the observer feeling as if fashion as a whole had somehow been moved seismically forward, the collection was not cliche in the least, nor could it be said that the overall result was trivial & been seen before, an observation that could sadly be used for most new collection shown of late.
Zvonko Markovic made a respectable debut on the runways of New York & if he continues to explore the fringes of the collection he presented for Fall 2016 & doesn’t fall into the realm of predictable, we are curious to see what he has in store for Spring 2017! Bravo & welcome to America!
