In what was without a doubt the most seamlessly merchandised collection of NYFW, Portuguese designer Katty Xiomara presented Spring 2018 on the runways of Skylight Clarkson Square. Of note as well was her choice to show the show in a reverse order as far as colors go, starting out with a Black story & ending on a bright, ultimately day tone of Turquoise or Aqua, depending upon the observer. Along the way, she made a few chromatic layovers with a White, Dusty Rose, Flamingo Pink & Orange or Melon groupings before landing on her closing vignette in the Turquoise end of the spectrum.
What bears mentioning however, is that the observer was taken on this journey without a single jump of the eye. In the end, we weren’t sure how we got there, but we were there!
The silhouettes were easy, flowy & forgiving to a range of bodies, with the preferred silhouette one of more fitted in the bodice & looser as it neared the floor. The dresses were the real story with literally every imaginable option explored. Katty Xiomara lists in her company bio that her collection is “aspirational yet accessible, elegant and timeless, sophisticated but playful, ultra-feminine with perfect tailoring.” For Spring 2018, she obviously set about proving this point & in our opinion, she did. She was inspired by imagining a brightly colored parachute being taken by a Caribbean breeze & blowing ashore in Miami’s Deco Architectural District.
Each piece not only reflected this inspiration but did so in a whimsical fashion that alludes to the innocence of a child’s imagination while manifesting in a way that isn’t the least bit juvenile. Rather, these are pieces that evoke a smile, brighten a day & refresh a tired wardrobe. American Sportswear? Mission accomplished!
