Recent newcomer DYNE showed why their collection has been one the break-out labels of recent fashion favor with their Spring 2019 collection presentation during NYFW: Men’s. Amid a growing swell of conversation around the relevance of NYFW: Men’s, DYNE assertively demonstrated precisely why Men’s collections are every bit as deserving of being shown as Women’s.
Founded in the athleisure tide of late, Creative Director Christopher Bevans took the collection even more assertively down this path, with a mix of pieces that left the observer feeling that each of these models is on his way home from the gym after a post day in the office workout. Suiting silhouettes were worn with versions of sweat pants, shorts with jackets, coats with shorts, hoodies with dressier bottom options & layers a’plenty. The stylized “+Dyne” logo was far more forward this season that some efforts of late appearing prominently on the front panels of shirts & even down the back of a truly stupendous Khaki over coat. Yet, the collection was without a doubt about the clothes more than the label, a further testament to just how strong a designer Mr. Bevans is.
It is clear why this collection is so popular & why it is getting such accolades amongst fashion’s insiders. The true test, however, will be how deftly it transitions beyond the point menswear sits at the moment. If Dyne can move beyond its stronghold of the current aesthetic, it will ultimately prove a label that matters. If it cannot, sadly, it may fade into oblivion as so many attempts of this ilk have in seasons past. My money is with the former as are my hopes!
