Under the simple moniker ‘Turkish Designers’, four Turkish based designers made their New York Runway debut… or at least three of them did. Asli Filinta, DB Berdan, & Simay Bulbul made their first appearance, while seasoned NYFW veteran & TheFashionList fave, Hakan Akkaya highlighted his leather & fur capsule as part of the ensemble.
Staged in Spring Studios, Gallery II, the show was generously underwritten by the Turkish Government as well as the Turkish Textile Council. The crowd was every bit as interesting an assemblage as the collections that walked the runway. On to the designers…
Asli Filinta – Showing a collection of easy-draped, tunic inspired ensembles that had a decidedly nomadic feel, Asli Filinta made a quiet, but respectable statement that was not immediately felt in the live show. These ensembles need to be studied & like a good novel, got better the more one observed. The fabrications represented a mélange of colors & textures that seemed at times clashing & at other times harmonic, but always inspired. Standouts were the leopard velvets layered over the __________.
DB Berdan – Mother & daughter design team Beg & Deniz Berdan, showcase a very sporty take on the “traditional” street wear collection. Neon was a large component in the color story, whether it was featured in the linings of hoods or parts of the pants and jackets alike. For fun & intrigue, the designing duo created jewelry that mounted on the models’ faces, heads & even in their mouths to lend an other-worldly, almost alien intrigue. The clothing wasn’t the only part of the story that was headline grabbing. One of the models chose to aggressively attack the runway in a most dramatic fashion, leaving many in the audience aghast. Whether planned or of the models own volition, the affect added even more intrigue to this collection that was born in Istanbul, but now hails from London. This is a label to watch… as we believe the future of BD Berdan is a bright one.
Hakan Akkaya Leather & Fur – Hakan Akkaya, after his solo showing of his Amish-Punk inspired collection a few days prior in NYFW, presented his capsule line of leather & furs in bright metallic hues. Each model walked the runway with full confidence & the audience was visibility excited & surprised to see this side of Hakan who traditionally shows only collection in a now trademark (almost) Black & White. Fun note… Hakan’s right hand Atelier Assistant, Hilal was one of his models, making her runway debut… fun! The crowd literally shrieked their approval as Hakan took his bow in a bright Red shirt, emblazoned the Gold star & sickle of the Turkish flag. The Turkish Consul General was seated front row & obviously liked what he saw as he & his wife both offered an enthusiastic greeting of applause during the show finale!
Simay Bulbul – Creative director, Simay Bulbul offered an easy, inventive take on traditional evening wear that was versatile enough to be worn both day & night. Sheer organza & Chantilly lace were the staples of this monochromatic collection that drew cheers from the crowd as it undoubtedly will with the retailers. After the show, we met up with Simay Bulbul backstage & must tell you that she is one of the most genuinely nice people we’ve met in the business in a long time.
In fact, all of these designers couldn’t have been more humble, welcoming & enamored by the attention they were being paid in NYFW. It’s such a wonderful show & we hope this program continues each season as it’s clear from the last two year’s shows, Istanbul has some serious fashion that balances just the right amount of spice with true substance to liven up a long & arduous show week. To borrow the name their famous desert, this show was pure “Turkish Delight!”
