The General Idea guy (& now gal) is ready to move this season, literally. As several models walked down the runway with luggage in tow, albeit colorful luggage perfectly married the their outfit in every way… this is fashion after all…
The color didn’t end there, however, as the luggage was just the beginning of the veritable color explosion that designer Bumsuk Choi sent down his runway for Spring 2018. Blues of every shade & hue imaginable, Orange, Red, Purple, Green, Yellow, you name a bright color & it was there. These were nicely juxtaposed opposite more muted Olive Greens & the occasional Khaki for balance, then popped with a dose of oversized stripes & even a digitally remastered abstract print to close the show. The effect was one of happiness, optimism & interest rather than confusion & conflict, which could be the case in a less trained designer’s hand.
On this silhouette front, Choi took the collection down the easy side of the fit spectrum with roomy layers that seemed to effortlessly build upon one another to create a series of final ensembles that resonated as modern in every sense imaginable. Particular standouts were there Electric Yellow overcoat shown over the Black & White striped shorts & a few of the easy layered looks that opened the show that played not only with layers of color, but lengths of hemlines to elongate the overall silhouette to great effect.
General Idea is always a solid collection that thoughtfully pushes the fashion envelope gently forward to the great delight of his legions of fan in Asia & to a growing degree on these shores. Spring 2018 has proven once again that every fan Mr. Choi counts in his corner is one he not only deserves, but one he came by honestly, the result of good design.
