Designer Sylvie Millstein took inspiration from Dutch painter Johannes Vermeer for her effort for Resort 2018 for Hellessy. Vermeer focused on the clothing in his paintings, rendering them with care & concern despite the fact that the scene of the painting itself was a snippet of everyday life. Millstein gave a modern take on Vermeer’s concept & created a collection of bold statement pieces that are easy enough to allow the wearer great latitude in how she chooses to wear them.
The collection is awash in bold colors like Cerulean Blue, Cobalt, Red, & Fuchsia which are off-set by a more neutral palette of Ecru, Heather Gray, & Sky Blue. The combination creates a balanced overall palette that allows for nearly endless interpretations. Fabrications run the gamut from Silk jacquards & twills to cotton poplins, gabardines, & satin crepe. One pattern that on mention seems incongruous, yet when viewed as a whole seemed fully harmonious, was a rustic Black & Red Buffalo Check. Instead of the traditional cotton flannel fabrication, Millstein executed the pattern in a Silk & cotton for a fresh take on classic.
The brand’s signature top was updated this season with further developed asymmetric & off the shoulder elements. The Astrid, an off-shoulder shirt with side buttons & slit sleeves, is an elegant take on classic flannel shirting, while the asymmetric belted wrap silhouette of The Elin shirt is tailored yet effortless.
Dynamic details are further incorporated into the trousers & skirts this season, with details like cinched front slits, ruffle hems, side cascades & knotted sashes adding drama to classic silhouettes. The Ida keyhole front blouse with slit sleeves & The Luc wide leg patch pocket pants, both in striped cotton jersey, embody the elegance & ease for which Hellessy has become known.
The Hellessy woman wants a wardrobe that moves effortlessly while making a strong statement. With this collection, Millstein continues to demonstrate an inherent & keen understanding of her customer. However, there’s enough in this collection to cause even the complete stranger to the label to stand & take serious notice.
