London based menswear designer Liam Hodges categorizes his collection as a luxury brand for the mad ones, and the bad ones, those who are desirous of everything, and those who forsake conformity every day not just at the weekend. For Spring 2018, he chose to work around the theme of NOISE, manifested throughout the collection in the moniker being literally placed on the garments themselves, or via a giant screaming bear motif which showed up as appliqués & embroidery, & even walked the runway in full life sized version for the final look.
The collection was indeed at times visually noisy with bold silhouettes & heavy-handed detailing, but never overly so. While these looks were thematically & creatively solid, it was when he took the collection a bit quieter that things really amped up on the fashion front. Several of the looks shown were so attractive that if this is some harbinger for what the upcoming men’s fashion collections are going to look like in Milan, Paris & New York, we are truly excited by what is to come.
The most successful looks were several Hodges created in conjunction with iconic athletic brand FILA. The color-blocked FILA long-sleeve polo was a piece that this observer may just have to seek out & procure for his wardrobe proper! Other standouts were the Black sweatshirt with the mascot teddy bear appliquéd slightly askew on the chest, as well as some of the oversized striped sweaters & the oversized fanny packs, made in partnership with Côte&Ciel, that were worn cross body for a new take on streetwear accessories. Street wear staple, G-Shock also made a formidable showing on the models as well.
Liam Hodges is a name not yet widely known on these shores, but with the rising interest in menswear in America, it’s a name worth noting, as I suspect you’ll be seeing the label in a trend driven store near you soon!
