The L.A. fashion world was excited to welcome Altaf Maaneshia straight from the runway at Mercedes Benz Fashion Week in New York City in February. He is the first Pakistani designer to be featured at MBFW. So L.A. was thrilled to welcome him to L.A. Live‘s Fashion Week.
Altaf Maaneshia’s collection featured an array of fabrics, including wool, tweed, taffeta, silk, satin & leather. Intricate Gold detailing embellished some of the more formal pieces. Silver belts added a chic flare to cinch in waistlines. Two of the long, softly flowing White gowns evoked a Grecian mystique. Neat, clean cuts were exemplified in the design of leather jackets in Red, Camel & Mustard Yellow. Paired with short-shorts, they created a very “Fall in L.A.” look. Faux fur provided some warmer, wintry looks.
Altaf Maaneshia has given today’s modern woman a contemporary, ready-to-wear line with a variety of wearable designs to choose from.
I caught up with Altaf Maaneshia directly after his runway show & had a chance to ask him a few questions…
Jacquie Bennet (JB): What does fashion mean to you?
Altaf Maaneshia (AM): Fashion is passion to me. It is a true reflection of all the beauty that surrounds me. Even when I am observing something not related to fashion it serves as inspiration.
JB: When did you first realize that you wanted to become a fashion designer?
AM: Well, I’ve always been interested in art & had a fascination with garments & their construction. I would say I had an idea this would be my path since I was nine or 10.
JB: Did anything in your upbringing influence your decision?
AM: My father was a diamond designer, so his work had a great impact on my creativity. I have experienced the cultures of many countries & this has enabled me to widen the perspective of my design process.
JB: What was the first article you ever designed?
AM: At a very young age I made shorts for myself & a friend.
JB: What inspired your AW14 collection?
AM: The collection is a tribute to the strong, independent & modern women of the world. I want them to see my designs and envision them as something they can feel empowered by wearing.
JB: What matters to you most as a fashion designer?
AM: When my designs are on the runway I want people to immediately relate to them & imagine how they will look wearing them.
