With the insanity surrounding a certain wedding last month & then the “Justify-able” frenzy around a certain three races here on these shores, it’s no surprise that the annual Equine Event in England, known as the Royal Ascot is getting more attention than normal this year!
We took the opportunity to ask new comer to the millinery scene, Genevieve Foddy, the design genius behind the Genevieve Rose Atelier label a few question about what to expect in terms of fashion atop the heads of the fairest of them all at this year’s Royal Ascot races. Here’s what she had to say:
(TheFashionList) Is there a specific dress code when it comes to hats seen at the Royal Ascot?
(Genevieve Foddy) Ascot has a very specific dress code for guests holding tickets to the Royal Enclosure. Dresses must fall to the knee or longer, shoulder straps must be wider then one inch, trousers & jumpsuits should fall to the ankle, hats or headpieces must be worn & must have a base bigger than 4 inches. (See The Lady Suffolk & The Claire below)
(TFL) Gentlemen are required to wear black or grey morning dress including a waistcoat & tie, black or grey top hat & black shoes with socks.
(GF) Royal Ascot attendees, regardless of where they are seated, love to take the opportunity to wear a lovely dress or suit and hat so it is not difficult to enforce the dress code.
(TFL) Who’s hat are you most excited to see & why? What do you predict they will be wearing?
(GF) I am always excited to see what hats the ladies of the Royal Family wear. This year I’m especially looking forward to seeing what the Duchess of Sussex chooses as this will be her first year attending Ascot as a member of the Royal Family. The Duchess has so far only had a few occasions to wear a hat & she has tended to choose quite small & demure pieces in neutral colors. I would love to see her try a more sculptural piece in a bright color! (See The Sardar below)
Princess Beatrice is a regular attendee of Ascot and she always debuts several new and exciting pieces. She wore a very simple headband piece to the Royal Wedding so I’m hoping she goes back to favoring some more eye-catching pieces. (See The Palomo below)
(TFL) What are your hat trend predictions for the event?
(GF) I think the hat & dress choices of the guests at the Royal Wedding were a good indication of what trends we can expect at Ascot this year; plenty of floaty, floral dresses & some bold colored-pieces. I expect hats will be small to mid sized with very sculptural shapes & neutral colors to offset the colored florals. (See The Emilie below)
However Ascot is a once-a-year opportunity to have a lot of fun wearing hats so there will always be some spectacular pieces with huge trims, bright colors & amazing matching ensembles. (See The Black Thunder below)
