Summer travel season is just getting started & with all the excitement also comes some worry around the unknown, as the last of the states are opening & travel restrictions are being lifted around the country. Travelers have been turning to CBD products in order to help with issues including anxiety management, stress relief & relaxation, & also for pain support from spending hours on the plane or in a car. We know that travel can take its toll on our body & also on our minds, especially on the heels of a global pandemic, & CBD can help maintain healthy habits to help us recover faster & feel better. But what are the legalities of traveling with CBD? We chat with the Vice President of Marketing at Sky Wellness – a brand of premium CBD wellness products – about taking these items across state lines & overseas. Here’s what they have to say about traveling with CBD.
Before getting into what’s allowed & what’s not, we need to clarify that Cannabidiol or CBD for short, is typically derived from hemp. There’s also Cannabigerol (CBG), a lesser-known minor cannabinoid known for its effects on energy & skin health. Please note, the products we are talking about contain CBD &/or CBG only, & are free of THC which is the main psychoactive chemical in cannabis.

Both CBD & CBG are an appealing option to support a healthy lifestyle. Specifically for traveling, the ingredients in these products can help reduce anxiety, support relaxation, & offer relief from pain & fatigue. You can check out Sky Wellness’s full collection of daily wellness CBD products here. According to the 2018 Farm Bill, CBD & CBG are legal in all 50 states. They were proven to be a non-harmful substance & were removed from the TSA’s cannot fly list. That means as long as the product is THC free, you are free to travel with it throughout the country. Just make sure that if you are carrying on, & you’re traveling with a lotion, gel or other liquid, that the item still adheres to the 3.4-ounce limit required by the TSA.
While that might be great news to many, we need to be more careful with international travel. As borders start to open up, we recommend you be diligent with checking the international rules & regulations on CBD with the foreign country or countries you will be visiting. The laws are constantly changing & vary from country to country. It gets even more confusing if you are traveling by cruise ship. We recommend contacting your cruise line directly for more information on what is safe to bring onboard.
Some other tips for traveling with CBD or CBG
- To reduce the amount of liquids you are traveling with, we recommend CBD products in gummy, softgel or pill form instead.
- The FAA does not allow vapes & other battery powered smoking devices in checked bags. You can however, travel with them in your carry-on baggage or on your person.
- To avoid delays, never try to hide or disguise these products while you’re traveling.
- For international travel, when in doubt it is best to leave your items at home.
With rules & regulations constantly changing, it’s best to be diligent with your research on the legalities of all cannabis products. We wish you the most fun & enjoyment with all your travel plans, & most importantly we hope you stay safe this summer!
