A study in contrasts, Kate Hundley’s latest collection balances delicate femininity with a decidedly rebellious streak, finding inspiration somewhere between the art studio, the office, & the rock ‘n’ roll underground.
There is something particularly intriguing about what lies beneath a finished work of art. For Spring 2027, designer Kate Hundley takes inspiration from grisaille, the often-hidden underpainting that provides the foundation for a finished masterpiece. It is a study of the quieter layers, the process, the practice, & the years of refinement that ultimately make the final creation possible.
That philosophy finds its way into a collection built around subtle layers, softened contrasts, & unexpected details. Cream organza overlays White, Blush strips float over Cream, & layers of lace overlap & blur together. Raw edges on organza strips & a tie-front jacket offer a deliberate departure from the expected polish.
The silhouettes are lean & often sleek, with sporty influences translated through soft materials, lace inlays, & contrast stitching. Boxy button-up shirting & fluid tie-front pants provide balance, while leather brings a sharper point of view. A nipped-in Tan calfskin jacket features a slight flare at the waist & wrist-baring sleeves, accented with eyelet detailing. The signature Eloise jacket returns in a tumbled, deep-Chocolate moto leather.
But look beyond the initial impression of sweetness & a more rebellious personality begins to emerge. The lace-front suede mini-shirt & Black leather vest, with lacing panels running along the front princess seams, introduce just enough edge to shift the collection away from conventional femininity. The Life Vest Orange viscose/silk Carpenter Pants bring an unexpected workwear sensibility into the mix, while the Drawstring Panel dress demonstrates how a single, well-considered detail can transform an otherwise familiar & eminently wearable silhouette.
There is also a subtle rock ‘n’ roll girl lurking throughout the collection. Not necessarily the girl performing onstage, but the one who might spend her evenings in a band & still have to show up for her day job dressed appropriately for the office. She understands the dress code, but has no intention of surrendering her individuality.
Interestingly, as I sit down to write this story, two songs appear consecutively on my playlist: OMD’s “If You Leave” & Nirvana’s “Come As You Are.” Perhaps the musical universe is offering a little editorial assistance. The former brings to mind the Molly Ringwald character in John Hughes’ Pretty in Pink, the sweet girl from the wrong side of the tracks navigating her way into a world of acceptance. The latter captures the grunge sensibility that runs quietly beneath Hundley’s polished exterior. Somehow, both belong here.
Even the accessories play along. The Fiona Tote arrives in satin in vibrant Flame Orange & Turquoise, adding a welcome burst of color to the collection.
Kate Hundley’s Spring 2027 collection is ultimately about the beauty of contrasts: sweet & rebellious, polished & raw, feminine & independent. The result is a wardrobe that doesn’t require choosing sides.
